Costume designer William Travilla originally created a gem-studded bikini for Marilyn Monroe to perform “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. However, facing fallout from some nude photographs Marilyn had taken as a struggling actress several years before, the studio nixed the risqué ensemble. Travilla quickly whipped up the now-iconic pink dress to replace it.
